  • British High Commission in Malawi Commits £3 Million to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance

The British High Commission in Malawi has announced a commitment of £3 million to address Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) through the Fleming Fund, according to an announcement made on the official Facebook page of the British High Commission in Malawi. The announcement highlights the significant global impact of AMR, with around 1.27 million people worldwide dying annually due to AMR, one in five of whom are children under five.

The funding aims to bolster surveillance capacity in 13 laboratories, improve bacterial infection management, and support specialist training for laboratory, pharmacy, and hospital staff. This investment builds upon a previous £4 million contribution to Malawi’s National Action Plan to combat AMR. The Fleming Fund, a UK aid program, supports multiple countries in Africa and Asia to tackle AMR through strengthening surveillance systems and providing grants and fellowships.
