Two local organizations, Revolution Human Aid and Transparency Initiative (REHAAT Initiative) and Foundation for Rural Development (FORUD) are seeking about K30 million to plant over 30, 000 trees in Malawi’s most environmentally devastated areas.

According to Executive Director for REHAAT Initiative Tizgowere Msiska, the initiative which has been named ‘Buy a Seedling, We Plant’ has been organized upon looking at how fast Malawi is losing trees

Msiska said in Malawi, deforestation is estimated to be responsible for the loss of 33,000 hectors of tree-covered land a development which he said should not be condoned anymore.

He told this publication that deforestation has resulted into floods, dry spell and intermitted rainfall hence the initiative which he said will target some selected districts including: Karonga, Salima, Kasungu, Neno, Nsanje and Chikwawa.

He has since asked the corporate world to welcome and support the initiative claiming the global has been hit hard by the effects of climate change which he said is as a result of deforestation and said dealing with it needs collective efforts.

“This ‘Buy a Seedling, We Plant’ Initiative is an initiative that aims at planting 30,000 trees in environmentally-devastated areas across Malawi.

“The issue of deforestation and climate change in general is a global problem and it should concern everyone including the corporate world. It is for this reason that we call upon the corporate world to be part of this initiative and support it either financially or materially,” said Msiska.

He added that through contribution done by members of the two institutions, FORUD and REHAAT, the initiative has already raised 1,000 tree seedlings and wants to have in stock the remaining 29,000 seedlings before tree planting season is launched.

He said well-wishers can contribute towards the initiative through the following bank account details: Bank Name: NBS Bank, Account Name: Human Aid and Transparency Initiative, Account number: 18982013, Branch : Mzuzu, Swift Code: NBSTMWMW.

Or through: National Bank account under the name Foundation for Rural Development, Account Number: 1005900405, Branch: Zomba, Branch Code: 00006, Swift Code: NBMAMWMW and also through TNM Mpamba: 0886102088.

Msiska concluded by saying:
“Note that, any coin contributed towards this initiative will be accounted for; it will be broken down publicly. Malawi is ours and we are for Malawi.”
