Save the Children has promised to continue supporting Malawian girls in line with theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl, “Digital generation. Our generation.”
This is according to Save the Children’s communications manager Lawrent Kumchenga who in an interview with Prime Time News said Malawian girls need more support from various institutions.
Kumchenga said the government, Donor Community, Private Sector and civil society, needs to consider connecting all girls in Malawi especially those living rural areas to the digital world.
He then said this will not only reduce the social inequalities in timely access to information including quality and education, but also has the potential of reducing gender gap.
The communications manager further told this publication that his organization will bring more actions that will see Malawian girls being transformed into the digital generation.
“Save the Children will continue strengthening capacity of girls through mobilization into spaces such as clubs, camps, District Child Parliaments, to mention but a few.
“We will help in building their capacity through trainings, exposure and access to relevant information and providing opportunities for dialogue with duty bearers to influence decision on investments,” said Kumchenga.
Kumchenga added that the country has good pieces of legislation in protecting the girl child but says what is remaining is the political will to end violence translated in increased investment to civic education and upholding the rule of law.
The organization has since advised girls to realize that education is a fundamental human right and the only equalizer that has potential of breaking poverty cycle.
The International Day of the Girl is commemorated on 11 October every year and in Malawi the event was held in Nkhotakokota graced by Minster of Gender Community Development and Social Welfare, Patricia Kaliyati.
