The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) says it is still committed to helping the Malawi government in implementing developmental projects as it has signed a new grant agreement.
The sentiments follow governments of Malawi and the United States of America’s Tuesday signing of a Development Objective Grant Agreement valued at $1.2 billion which is approximately One trillion Kwacha.
Speaking at the signing in ceremony which was held in Lilongwe, the US ambassador to Malawi Robert Scott said the grant is the US government’s support to advance Malawi’s developmental projects.
Scott said the new five year bilateral assistance will see the Malawi government building a democratically accountable and a self-dependant country that will as well be gender equitable with Malawians benefit from various developmental projects.
“Our signing today marks an extraordinary sign of the mutual commitment of the U.S. and Malawian governments to advance shared development objectives that benefit the Malawian people,” said Scott.
Concurrently, the USAID Country Director, Catie Lott who signed the agreement at the event said they believes that through this new grant agreement, Malawi can easily create an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant nation fulfilling the Malawi 2063 vision.
At the event which was held at US Ambassador’s residence in the capital city, the country was represented by
minister of Finance Felix Mlusu who said that the agreement will boost performance of some of government’s key development areas.
Mlusu added that the grant will as well help the country attain some of Malawi 2063 agendas through shared development objectives.
